Wilderness Permit Information
Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness is located at a high altitude where the growing season is short. Plant life has little opportunity to recover from overuse from one season to the next, and unless we take the steps to protect these areas, they could be lost to us forever. To ensure the preservation of the natural environment and assure the visitor of a quality visitor experience, the Department of Parks and Recreation has instituted a Wilderness Permit System.
Everyone entering the Mount San Jacinto State Wilderness, both for the day and overnight camping, must have a permit in their possession. Groups are limited to 15 people, and juvenile groups must have at least one adult leader for each 14 juveniles. Dogs are not permitted in wilderness areas of the State Park System.
Day Use Wilderness Permits are free and available 24 hours at:
Park Headquarters in Idyllwild
Long Valley Ranger Station on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway side
Wilderness Camping Permits are $5.00 per person and are available at:
Park Headquarters in Idyllwild
Long Valley Ranger Station on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway side
The San Bernardino National Forest has a similar permit system in effect for its federal wilderness area known as the San Jacinto Wilderness. Both the State Park and National Forest honor each other's DAY USE PERMITS; however, each agency has its own camping permit system that you must apply for separately. San Bernardino National Forest permits are issued at the San Jacinto Ranger District located at 54270 Pine Crest, Idyllwild, CA 92549, (909) 382-2921.
Winter Conditions
Winters are highly variable in Mount San Jacinto State Park. Wet winters can dump several feet of snow, while dry winters may only result in a few inches here and there. Regardless, always be prepared for snowy/icy conditions. Traction devices like microspikes or crampons are highly recommended if you plan to hike into the wilderness. For up-to-date trail conditions, call the Long Valley Ranger Station at (760) 327-0222.

How Do Filters Work?
By default an alert scans all reservable, non-ADA sites at the campground you've selected. Filters give you options to narrow down your search.
Allowed Equipment
Tent - Include sites that allow tents RV/Trailer - Include sites that allow RVs and/or Trailers Vehicle Length - If RV/Trailer is selected, an optional Vehicle Length filter will be shown. If you enter a vehicle length, we will only scan sites with a maximum vehicle length less than or equal to the length you enter
If your profile has one or more vehicles, the length of your default vehicle will be used to pre-populate the length filter. You can change this if you want. If both Tent and RV/Trailer filters are selected, we scan for sites that allow either. If a vehicle length is entered it only applies to RV/Trailer sites. If the RV/Trailer filter is selected, the Hookups and Vehicle Length filters will be shown.
Site Types
Include ADA sites - Include ADA sites when scanning Exclude RV/Trailer Sites - Set this filter to scan sites that only allow tents, ignoring any that allow RVs/Trailers.
If the Exclude RV/Trailer Sites filter is selected, the Hookups and Vehicle Length filters will be ignored. Scans will ignore sites that allow both tents and RVs/Trailers
Hookups
No Preference - Default value. Scans all sites regardless of any hookups they may or may not have Full Hookups - Only scan sites that have electric, water, and sewer hookups Electric & Water - Only scan sites that have electric and water hookups Dry (no hookups) - Only scan sites that do not have any hookups
How Do Dates Work?
The date range you choose must be the exact checkin and checkout dates of your desired trip.
When checking the availability for your alert it will not match and alert you unless ALL of the dates (except checkout, of course) in your date range are available.
It is not currently possible to enter a large date range and get an alert if some dates in that range become available.
For example, if you want to camp for the 4th of July holiday here are some valid and invalid examples of date ranges for alerts:
Valid
Alert Dates Selected: July 2nd-July 6th
